"If your dream or vision doesn’t scare you, it’s not big enough. Be bold. Be audacious."
I don’t recall exactly where I first heard this quote, and there are several variations of it out there, but it’s a favorite of mine that I actually keep taped to my dresser mirror. And I think of it often when it comes to my business. Because launching and owning a business is not just scary - it’s terrifying.
It’s terrifying to first take that leap of faith and leave a secure job, a steady paycheck, benefits, a 401K (with employer match). In addition to losing financial security, there’s the terrifying fear of failure. "What if I fail? What if I don’t have enough to offer? What if I don’t know enough, am not good enough, don't try hard enough, etc?”. Then there’s the fear of not succeeding, losing money, being responsible for the livelihoods of employees, etc. It’s scary business owning a business.
No matter how well you plan and prepare before you take that jump, it’s going to be terrifying. This is one area that having a career/business coach can provide a lot of benefit. Someone who can help keep you motivated and on track, help keep you accountable towards succeeding, or just help boost your confidence along the way when you need it. I’ll tell you a little secret - I worked with a coach. Yes - as I was building my own coaching business (ironically). For those very reasons above - it was someone to help me work through the fear of leaping.
We’ve all heard that saying, “You can’t fail if you don’t try." Well it’s that fear that will keep you from trying. So just go into it knowing it’s going to be terrifying, and that’s ok. You might fail, but hey - you might just succeed. Try to hold onto the fact that it scares you because it’s a big dream, and that dream is what makes it worth it. And remember, to be bold and to be audacious.
